本校創校於民國36年2月，起先是日本人在南靖糖廠所辦之南靖小學，而於光復之初，由水上國民學校接收，而本廠員工子女須遠到水上國民學校就讀，群感不便，因而籌畫自辦小學，一面組織董事會報請之案，交涉收回水上國民學校接收之教具圖書儀器等，成立嘉義市私立台糖小學，於36年9月30日開學上課。
